Variations on a Theme – Deli Sandwiches
The perfect deli sandwich begins with the perfect bread. The bread used to create your favorite sandwiches is probably the most important and possibly the first ingredient of a great deli sandwich. Soft, fresh-baked bread with a medium to dark brown crust and an internal softness is just about perfect for a great deli sandwich. You might want to also offer other kinds of bread for other sandwiches, or let customers choose their own varieties of bread for their sandwiches.
A good base for any deli sandwich is a hearty tomato sauce. Your sauce should be prepared long before you begin cooking the sandwich so that it can stand up to the long cooking process. Traditional tomato sauces have been made with Worcestershire sauce, but you can use a variety of classic ingredients to create a tasty tomato-based sauce. If you are looking for a great way to use up leftover meat, try a marinara or Old Bay Seasoning sauce made with Italian spices and dried herbs. This old-fashioned Italian sauce lends a unique flavor to any variety of deli items that are prepared with it.
Another ingredient to boost your sandwich’s nutritional quotient is to add a piece of toasted, chopped, or sliced vegetables to the mix. Raw vegetables are best, but if you are unable or unwilling to eat raw vegetables, you might consider using canned beans or avocados instead. Be careful with the type of vegetables that you use, though. A high fat cheese such as Swiss or Colby may contain too much fat to be a good choice for an outdoor picnic.
Another option for added crunch is to place your deli sandwich made with sliced bread in a toasted baguette. To achieve the proper texture, use bread that has been toasted to get the toasted part dark and toasting before folding it over the baguette to seal the sandwich in place. Leave out of the baguette portion of the sandwich any bit that touches the hot grill. You will want to flip once half way through the process to make sure the sandwich is cooked and crisp. Place a slice of tomato inside the sandwich and another slice of tomato on top. Place the deli meats that you are going to use on top of the sliced bread and any other vegetables that you want included.
Another sandwich that uses bread rolls is the Chicago-style deli meat sandwich. This sandwich makes use of a piece of bagel bread, which is cut into thin pieces. Add a variety of meats, cheeses and other ingredients into the bagel bread. Close the tip of the bagel bread with a slice of tomato or lettuce and spread a layer of mayonnaise on top.
For an unusual breakfast sandwich, consider an egg salad sandwich. Start with eggs cooked in butter and then top with chopped mixed greens (broccoli, spinach, cilantro), thinly sliced tomatoes, thinly sliced scallions, green peppers (red and green), and an assortment of mushrooms. Reusan cheese and shaved parmesan cheese round out this healthy breakfast sandwich. For a southwestern twist, try using cheddar cheese, chili powder, chopped black olives, and guacamole. This snack is easy to prepare and is good all day long.
